The best way to stop an overnight in Pakbeng, Laos

The name call Pakbeng Lao call (ປາກແບງ) the name came from Beng River, the Beng River to join the mighty Mekong River, just south of the town, this one is the check point, the boat have to stop for journey upstream and downstream, most of them move up to be because of the flood in raining season the river is high and the road, it more comfortable for transportation to go to Oudomxay province.

The people here live the boat side of the road, there are not many restaurants and accommodations, in high season the room not enough room for the tourist.

The name of Pakbeng the most people know as the half way for sleep a night on the way to go from Huay Xai to Luang Prabang by slow boat, the boat will take about 8 hours for journey downstream, for the slow boat upstream from Luang Prabang to Pakbeng.
Before in 2012, no electricity in Pakbeng, they use dynamo power, some guest house they give you candle or torch, one of the guest house is fire because of the candle at the restaurant the use candle.

Pakbeng halfway

At 6-10 pm was electricity in Pakbeng, not obvious in remote village, after 10 pm it is pitch dark in the one street of Pakbeng.
Now electricity arrived 24 hours available, sometime you will still regular power outages (because the electricity not enough) you should bring head light, flashlight. The town will close the same as after 10 pm.

Thing to do in Pakbeng.

One day trekking tours

Jungle trekking about 5 hours, we would recommend between 13 to 55 years old
Check in at 8:15 am then drive about one hours, the trekking will departure to the jungle between mountains,
On the way thought rice flew, stop and break for lunch on the way (picnic lunch) it would be local food,  you can swimming at the stream on the way back, visit the tribe on the way it would be unforgettable experience.

Journey by boat on the Mekong River.

1. The pubic slow boat from Pakbeng to Luang Prabang will take 8 hours will departure about 9:30 – 10 am, please check in before.
You can’t reserve the seat, only (first come – first serve) the boat will take about 8 hours.
The boat will journey every day.
The cost 105,000 kip or in US$15 each
The cost for the bicycle 30, 000 kip or US$4 p/b
The cost for the Motorcycle 120, 000 kip or US$15 p/b

When do you get the dock in Pakbeng some guys would like to help you to carry your bag to your guesthouse, someone charge 10,000 – 15,000 kip/ bag, please becarefull your bag sometime they take them away.
There was another guys advertising the rooms at the pier, if you are ok for the price you can go with them.

Departure daily depend on the people in the morning at 8 am to noon.
The cost 170,000 kip each for tourist.
Lao people cost 130,000 kip each.
If you are in a hurry, they will charge 1,000,000 kip full price for charter boat.

The guesthouse start from 80,000 kip to 150,000 kip per night
The hotels and resorts cost US$40–US$130 per night
The resorts and lodge cost US$70 –US$300 per night, include diner and breakfast

Market in Pakbeng

Morning market:
The local people most on the them go to market in the morning, some they come exchange their goods, the hill tribe come to sell their food,
Most of them are fresh as such vegetable, fish, meats …
Evening market:
Just walking to the local market, in the market some people come to buy fresh food for cooking.
